In India, the Mundan ceremony of a baby is believed to be an extremely important ritual among the Hindus. In this ceremony, the tonsuring of the baby’s first natural hair after birth is carried out as it is believed that the hair that the baby is born with, actually carries some undesired traits of the past life. This ceremony is also known as Chaula or Choodakarana. Once the ceremony is performed, the baby is given a thorough bath – a further cleansing bath followed by the application of turmeric paste. A lock of the baby’s shaved hair is preserved and later given as an offering to the Lord. Many devotees especially visit the Tirupati Balaji temple for this while many offer it in a Vishnu temple.
It is believed that the hair is shaved off to purify the child’s soul and also to ensure the well-being of the baby. It is also believed that Mundan (shaving of hair from head) lowers the temperature of the baby thereby making the child calm and enhancing the blood circulation in child’s body.
No doubt that it is an important ceremony and after making all the preparations then comes the important part i.e. to invite your guests & relatives for this milestone celebration.
