Bhai Dooj, also called as Bhau Beej, Bhai Tika, Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Phonta is a festival where the brother and sister bond is celebrated. Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj both are celebrated to cherish the bond every brother and sister share. Widely celebrated all over the country, Bhai Dooj is signified by the prayers offered by the sisters for the well-being of their brothers. The day falls on the last of the Diwali celebrations, which is the fifth day. As per the Hindu calendar, Bhai Dooj coincides with the second day of the Shukla Paksha, also known as the fortnight of the month of Kartika.
As per the ancient mythology, there are two stories for Bhai Dooj. One being of Yamraj and the other of Lord Krishna. A few centuries ago, the God of death, The Yamraj, visited his sister Yami also known as Yamuna, on this auspicious day of Bhai Dooj. Yami welcomed his dear brother with a beautiful garland and applied a tilak on his forehead. She also served him with luscious dishes. The siblings ate together and enjoyed every bit of their meal. Out of his affection for his sister, Lord Yamraj promised to protect all those men who received the auspicious mark (tilak) on their forehead. Since then, this day is celebrated. Another popular origin story for this festival is when Lord Krishna’s sister Subhadra welcomed him with an aarti, tilak, sweet dishes and flowers after he killed the demon king Narakasur decades ago.
It is a prominent festival where the brother promises to stand by his sister in happiness, sorrow, difficult times or need and the sister in turn, shows her respect for her brother by welcoming him by cooking some sumptuous dishes, smearing his forehead with the auspicious mark (tilak) and with a gorgeous garland. Women also apply Mehendi on this day.
In most parts of the country, women who don’t have a brother celebrate this auspicious festival by worshiping the moon God instead. This is the reason that children call the Moon as Chandamama.
