Delhi Restaurants Gear Up for Navratri

Navratri, as the literal translation goes, refers to the celebration of nine days and nine nights, celebrated all over India with much fervor and devotion. During these auspicious nine days, the goddess of strength and the deity of power are worshipped. The goddess of power, Goddess Durga, is worshiped in nine different forms during each of these nine days. Each of these forms has a specific significance and the ‘puja‘ varies accordingly. Navratri is celebrated in most parts of northern, eastern and western India.

Each culture and subculture has a different perspective with regards to the festivities. However, during these special nine days of festivities known as Navratri, one thing which is almost common across cultures is the type of food consumed, though the recipes might differ depending upon the tastes and preferences of the specific culture.

Planning an Event?

During these nine days, Hindus do not consume non-vegetarian food, onions, and garlic. The devotees of Goddess Durga observe ‘fast(s)’ eating only one proper meal per day. They consume ‘Kuttu ka atta’ also known as ‘Singhare ka atta’ and ‘Samak ke chawal’ during these nine days. These festive meals are commonly referred to as ‘Vrat ka khana’.

Since there are so many restrictions in terms of what can be consumed and not consumed during these nine days, usually people avoid dining out. Considering this as a big loss to restaurants business, most of the food joints across the city have started offering customized ‘Navratri’ menus to cater especially to the people who fast during these nine days. These menus include various items which at times make up for a four-course meal for the devotees. Some of the restaurants also offer distinct menus focusing on each day of the fast.

It’s time we gear up to the ‘Chaitra Navratra‘ season with some auspicious great food. To commemorate the nine-day long auspicious festival of fasting and eating ‘saatvik’ food, head over these restaurants to celebrate ‘Navratra’ with utmost style and yum!
