What is Dhanteras and What is its Significance?

Planning an Event?

As ‘Dhan Teras’ marks the beginning of the Diwali festival, it is of special significance. According to a mythological legend, the wife of King Hima saved her son’s life by offering the god of death ‘Yama’, gold and silver ornaments along with prayers. When Yama came in the form of a snake to take her son’s life, he was blinded by the dazzle of the gold and silver and couldn’t accomplish his task. It is therefore believed that purchasing gold and silver on this auspicious day keeps the lord of death, Yama, away.

How to Celebrate Dhanteras?

Diwali celebrations are mostly about lights and colorful decorations, lots of sweets and crackers. The following are a few common ways to celebrate Dhanteras.

  • Cleaning your house well before the festival arrives is very important. As you will be entertaining a lot of guests, and welcoming Goddess Laxmi, your house should be sparkling clean and welcoming.
  • Women can draw beautiful designs called rangoli on the doorsteps. They can be hand-drawn or can be printed with the help of pre-designed molds available in the market.
  • Beautiful kandils and colorful torans made of light-bulbs can be used to decorate the main entrance of the house.
  • Traditionally many sweets like laddus, chakli, karanji, chivda, etc. are prepared by women for the festival. However, these can also be bought readymade in the market or you can even buy mithai from a good halwai.
  • You can burn crackers along with kids. However, it is best to avoid crackers that make too much noise to avoid sound pollution.

What to Buy on Dhanteras?

Any festival is a time to have fun and exchange gifts. The following are a few ideas of what to buy or gift on the day of Dhanteras.

  • Gold and silver ornaments, utensils, decorative pieces or accessories are the most important traditional purchases.
  • Purchasing gold or silver idols, coins or even wooden carvings of Hindu gods like Lord Ganesh, Lord Kubera, Goddess Laxmi, etc. will also be a great buy.
  • Make sure that you make the right clothing choices that match the occasion. Buying something elegant and classy will make you shine during the festivities.
  • Buying or gifting things like household items, kitchen wear, various articles for home-decoration, are also very popular choices during these festive days.

While celebrating Dhan Teras, it is important to remember its significance. It is the festival of wealth and prosperity and is a way of establishing a prosperity mindset in us. It is also a festival that emphasizes an attitude of gratitude for our wealth and encourages us to share our joy with one another.
