5+ Photography Tips For Beginners | Getting Started as a Photographer

Photos are the best way to capture the precious moments of life, whether they are for your own self, a loved one or even for social media. Ultimately, capturing the perfect shot is a photographer’s goal. Whether you’re capturing a moment, documenting your life or are aiming to be a professional photographer; here are some basic tips that every photographer should work on mastering to improve their photography skills.

1. Make Sure You are Holding the Camera Properly

Planning an Event?

Starting from the very beginning, it is important to learn how to hold your camera properly. If you don’t do so, the camera tends to shake, and the images come out blurry. Although you’ll eventually develop your own way of holding the camera, you should always hold it with both hands. Grip the right side of the camera with your right hand and place your left hand beneath the lens to support the weight of the camera. The closer you keep the camera to your body, the stiller you’ll be able to hold it. If you need extra stability you can lean up against a wall or crouch down on your knees, but if there’s nothing to lean on, adopting a wider stance can also help.

2. Try to Engage with Your Subject

If you want to take engaging photos, you need to personally engage with your subject and understand the emotions you would want to highlight in your pictures. Try to capture the essence of the picture by taking into frame whatever possible. Do not cut out the important parts of your subject with the edge of your frame. Keep your horizons level and try to eliminate any distractions in your photo by adjusting your composition. Your photo should have a sense of balance and simplicity. And if the photo doesn’t come out the way you want it to the first time, keep experimenting until you get it right.

3. Use the Camera that is Available

If you already have a camera at home that is just sitting in a corner gathering dust, use it! The camera gear is not that important, what is essential is that you start with what you have and get comfortable with your camera. Try to focus on your skills and learn the basic camera settings first, before going for professional photography gear. Use the camera you already own to figure out what type of photography you would be interested in and to experiment with different subjects.

4. Get Familiar with the Camera Settings

As cameras have various settings, it can be difficult to get used to each one of them and it can be an overwhelming process. Instead, try each setting one at a time. First, switch from auto control to different camera modes. The focus on the aperture, shutter speed and ISO, as these are the most important settings to master initially.

5. Pay Attention to Light

The lighting in the picture determines its quality. The goal here is to balance the light’s intensity between your subject and background. Even if you’re photographing an amazing sunset, the photo could be ruined by a completely dark and silhouette foreground. The easiest way to solve this is to pay attention to the direction and softness of the light. If the light is too harsh, you could get bad shadows going across your subject, which is especially a problem for portrait photography. If the light is coming from an unflattering angle, see what you can do to move the light source (in a studio) or move the subject (outdoors) – or wait until the light is better (landscape photography). Also, if you’re taking handheld pictures, make sure there is enough light. If not, use a flash or move where it’s brighter.

6. Take Your Time

It’s easy to make mistakes in photography and the only sure way to avoid mistakes is to take your time to explore. Make sure to double-check the camera settings before a shot. Check your composition, the lighting and don’t forget to engage with your subject. If you are just starting off, take some time to figure out your equipment, get comfortable with the camera and then try to find a photography field you would like to specialize in.
