An upcoming wedding in an Indian family is an occasion that involves all the family members, near or far, in the frenzy of activities revolving around the “do”. Every relative is assigned some work or the other, not only to make use of their resources, but also to keep them happy and feel “important”. The youngsters are usually entrusted with responsibilities that are juvenile in nature. Working on the various aspects of the Sangeet function and to make it a happening one, is usually one of them.
This could be a tough responsibility for the youngsters who, in general, enjoy the latest songs and love to groove on popular Indi-mix Chartbusters as they must add some “oldies” and traditional songs to the playlist so as to keep all the family members entertained. Indian weddings are incomplete without an adequate collection of the popular western and regional songs from all eras. Here, we bring some unique ideas on the wedding songs that are perfect for a Sangeet ceremony.
In order to ensure that everybody enjoys the Sangeet, come up with songs that are equally enjoyed by the old generation as well as the new generation. For a mehendi function, songs like Mehendi hai rachne wali (Zubeida), Mehendi laga ke rakhna (Dilwale Dulhaniya le jayenge), etc, can be played. For Jaimal, traditional songs like Piya ka pyar mil jaye are appropriate. If you wish to infuse some more fun during these moments, play “Lak 28 kudi da, 47 weight kudi da”. It would make the atmosphere light with friends of the bride and the groom getting a chance to tease each other.
Any Sangeet ceremony would be incomplete without playing songs like “Ai meri zohrazabin, tuzhe maloom nahin” where you will be surprised to see even your elders agitated with your Uncles and Aunties blushing to the core.
Songs when played according to a theme sound cool and perfect! For example, if you are planning a traditional Sangeet ceremony, you can stick to the traditional “bana-banni” or folk songs like “Banni su banno pyaro lage”, “kesaiya hazari phool”. If planning a Disco Theme, then there is an unbound long list of songs available to choose from, from Bappi daa Hits to Yo-Yo Honey Sing’s Chart-busters.
These days, another theme that is gaining a lot of popularity, is the Retro Theme. In this, old hit songs from the 70s and 80s can be played. Guests can don a Retro look and groove on foot tapping numbers from yester years.
If you have a family with lot of dance enthusiasts who may like to showcase their skills and talents in front of everyone, you may choose songs like, “mere haathon mein nau-nau choodiyan hai”, “Navrai Majhi”, “Bole choodiyan, bole kangna”, “Gal meethi meethi bol” and many more.
These ‘foot-tapping’ numbers will drive even the reticent members of the family to come up on the stage and shake a leg with others. With all the family members involved, the entire set-up at the event would seem buzzing with mirth and ecstasy.
Music has always been a powerful medium to showcase delicate emotions and sentiments. You may go for some fast, peppy dance numbers to lighten the moments. Songs like “Tune mari entriyaan”, “Banno tera swagger”, etc. will ensure loud applauds and whistles in congruence with some energetic dance performances.
If a common Sangeet for the Bride and the Groom’s family has been organized, play some romantic songs allowing the soon to-be couple to dance and share some magical moments. Some ideal songs for this occasion would be “Zehenaseeb”, “Mein waari jaawan”, “Tum hi ho”, and the evergreen “jab koi baat bigad jaaye”. Later all the couples, new or old, can join in on the dance floor and experience some freshness in their relationship.
Our folk songs speak volumes about our culture. Including these songs in Wedding Sangeet can therefore, provide the much needed cultural touch to the event . If you are a Rajasthani, you can dance gracefully on numbers like “Ghoomar”, “Toote bajuband ri loom”, “Umrao thari boli meethi lage”, and many more. Or you may go for a mix of various regional songs like: Bhojpuri -“Ja Taare Hisua ke Bazaar Jija le alha”; Gujrati songs like- “Ae Hathe te mehndi”, “Bindo Sehro”; the classical Bengali ‘Biyar gaan’ or Punjabi Songs like “Heer” to build up a ‘desi’ charisma in your ceremony.
Once everyone has performed on their favorite songs, all family members can come up on the stage and dance on some popular numbers played by the DJ for the evening. Usually, DJs play the latest numbers as well as Remix of old popular songs.
“Le jyenge le jayenge, dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge”, “Baby Doll”, “Manali Trance”, “Pink Lips”, “Saturday Saturday”, “Desi Romance”, “Bang Bang”, are few such rocking remixes that are capable of setting the Dance Floor on fire and providing a finish to your event that lasts for long in the memories of all the people present.
